What to do if you're losing your New Year's motivation

Some days, things that usually feel easy suddenly feel hard.

You know what to do. You’re not confused. You’re not lacking information.
And yet… breakfast gets skipped, movement keeps getting delayed, and by the end of the day you’re wondering why everything feels like effort.

I hear this all the time:
“I know what works for me, I just can’t seem to stick to it right now.”

Here’s the thing most people don’t realise: this isn’t a motivation problem.
It’s an energy problem.

When sleep is bad, stress is high, blood sugars are all over the place, or your gut is unsettled (thanks to perimenopause), your capacity shrinks. And when capacity shrinks, habits that rely on willpower fall over first.

So instead of trying to “try harder”, the question becomes:
How can I make this easier to keep going?

A few things that genuinely help.

  • First, make your habits smaller than you think they need to be.
On low-energy days, the goal isn’t to do it perfectly, it’s to keep it alive. A short walk still counts. A protein-rich breakfast doesn’t need to be fancy. One supportive choice is enough.
  • Second, let your environment do some of the work.
If something requires too many decisions, it probably won’t happen. Keep the basics visible and easy. Food that supports you within reach. Movement that doesn’t require a big mental build-up. Habits that fit in easily, not an ideal version of it.
  • Third, fuel first.
Skipping meals, running on coffee, or pushing through without eating doesn’t make habits easier, it makes everything harder. Stable energy comes from eating regularly, including enough protein, carbs and fibre, and supporting your gut. This is often the missing piece.
  • And finally, drop the all-or-nothing thinking.
Habits aren’t about ticking every box every day. They’re about staying in the game, even when things aren’t perfect. Momentum beats motivation every time.

Some weeks, “doing the best you can” is exactly enough.

If January hasn’t gone to plan, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
It just means your habits need to work with your energy, not against it.

And that’s what we’re focusing on here: habits that stick, even when life gets busy.
